Superstitious Beliefs on New Year’s Day




As the clock strike 12:00 on New Year’s Eve, Filipinos still observed some of these superstitions, in the belief that it can influence their destiny in the months ahead.  
  • You should put 12 round shaped fruits as a centerpiece on your dining table, round shaped fruits attract good fortune.  
  • Fill up your rice, sugar, salt, flour containers, on New Year’s Eve, you will live a plenty for the coming year.
  • Place coins on the windowsill on New Year’s Eve for good luck.
  • Keep plenty of cash in your wallet or pockets to have plenty of money for the year. 
  • Wear polka-dots shirt or dress on New Year’s Eve /Day, to attract prosperity.  
  • Open your windows, door, cabinets on New Year’s Eve. Through opening windows and doors, it is believed that negative energy will leave and good energy will enter your house.
  • At the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, kids are encouraged to jump as high as they can, in the belief that doing so would make the kids grow taller.  
  • Create loud noises to drive away evil spirit.
  • Refrain from borrowing money on New Year’s Day if you don’t want to be indebted the entire year.
